Advice for Driving Teens

Your kids have heard it before, of course: don’t drive drunk. Don’t text while driving. Don’t. Don’t. Don’t. How can you convince your kids that parental advice is really worth listening to?

Believe it or not, the idea of a total DUI arrest or a car crash may seem less relevant than a conversation with the parents. Why? Those events seem abstract to an adolescent in the present moment. And, kids actually do listen to their parents.

Talking to your child about how driving is a privilege, and the risks involved, may help them understand the potential danger. Discussing the relationship between alcohol and driving, before your child begins drinking at parties, can help prevent reckless behavior.

Make your own rules and expectations clear. Your teenager should not talk on the phone while driving, of course, and he or she should always wear a seatbelt. You may also want to consider whether your child can drive his or her friends in the car. The presence of other adolescents in the car greatly increases the risk of an accident.

If you’re not sure what to say to your new driver, just be straightforward and honest. Explain to your teenager why your supervision is necessary, and why you’re concerned. Carefully let your child know that the consequences of careless driving can ruin or end lives.

Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Your role as a parent is essential. Do your best to have honest, heart-to-heart conversations about driving with your teenager, and be a good role model. In other words: drive carefully and attentively!

Child Labor Laws In The United States

While at one time there were no laws governing child employment, today the minors of the United States are protected by a number of child labor laws. In order to protect children from unhealthy working conditions the government developed the laws to standardized the practice of employing children. Today’s employers must abide by the rules or risk serious fines or jail time.

Remember that the different states within the country have created laws of their own. Still, there is a set of generalized rules to follow if you are considering the possibility of employing minors.

Children under the age of 14 cannot be employed except under very specific conditions. These conditions are primarily work in the acting industry.
Children may work to deliver newspapers once they have reached their tenth birthday.
Children do have the right to work under a variety of work-study programs. These must be approved by the state in which they live.
Parents who own a business may employ their children.
Once a minor has reached the age of 14, they have the right to employment under specific conditions. The job must not place them in a dangerous situation and parent must approve of the placement. Some states need the child’s school to sign off as well.

If you are considering hiring a student, it is critical that you contact your state to find what specific laws will apply to you. Failure to do so could end very badly for you and your business.

Ways to discipline a child’s bad behavior

The situation should be personalized with compassion before any response is given. This is not going to be an easy task but can be done. A parent should take on a tone that is understanding but extremely patient and ask their child the reason that they have acted badly. To convince them to tell you the truth about the situation let them know that you are on their side.

Even though you are discipling the child still show compassion for them. Once you get the hang of it you will find it gets easier. It will just be hard getting through the first time. Tell them they have misbehaved and can not do their favorite activity then give them a kiss. This should be done in a tone that is loving. This may appear confusing to the child at first but it does work. This should become a habit when discipline is needing to be done to the child.

Before discipling your child you need to understand all angles of the situation. All angles should be explained to the child so that they know and see them too. The child will gain a better understanding of the reason for their punishment.

All of these have probably been tried by you at least once but try them again.This time try them with the focus being on your behavior. Are you being to emotional? Do you completely understand or know the whole situation? Ask yourself this questions to help you find what works for you.

What are the Laws concerning Child Labor?

In America and most other countries there are laws in place that prohibit child labor. What those laws mean is that children that are under a certain age are not allowed to work. What does that mean to a child that may help around the farm or deliver the newspaper. Does the laws in place clarify these situations? The laws for child labor have been changed to include the conditions for child employment.There are strict regulations that have been set for this situation and include what has been laid out for certain categories of work.

Tooth Traditions: Baby Teeth Around the World

Children around the world lose their baby teeth and many cultures have special traditions that go along with this period of transition.

Under the Pillow
For parents in the United States, children loose their baby teeth and are paid a visit by the tooth fairy. The child places the tooth under his or her pillow before going to sleep at night and the tooth fairy takes the tooth away, leaving money or a small gift in its place. You can even find special tooth pouches in stores for keeping teeth safe under the pillow at night.

Parents in other countries have similar traditions for when children loose teeth. In France, children place teeth under their pillows for La Petite Souris (the little mouse) to come and take it away in the night. Mexican children also leave their tooth for a small mouse to take away. As in the US, children receive money or gifts in exchange. Similarly, in Slovenia, the mouse replaces the baby tooth with a piece of candy.

Throw It Far
Many cultures have traditions of throwing baby teeth for luck. Lebanese children are taught to throw their tooth into the ocean or into a field and say a rhyme for a long life. In Oman, children face the sun and throw the tooth as far as they can. In Greece, children throw their tooth up on top of the roof as a way to receive good luck.

In Japan, upper teeth are thrown under the house, while lower teeth are thrown up on the roof. This is a way of ensuring that lower teeth grow up straight and upper teeth grow down straight.

In some cultures, baby teeth are preserved by parents or even made into jewelry such as charm bracelets or pendents that can be kept. Baby teeth are symbols of childhood and preserving them a way of creating a unique keepsake for the child.

Parenting Differences: Early Childhood Learning

Different countries around the world hold very different beliefs about learning in early childhood. For some parents, building language skills and encouraging achievement is critical to the early years, whereas parents in other cultures are less focused on early education and more on raising a happy child. There are several ways that these beliefs differ.

Some cultures place a strong emphasis on early learning because they believe children have only a small window of time to learn skills. Preparation for School
Some cultures place emphasis on preparing a child for school socially, the United States is a good example. The social elements are deemed secondary to the academic experience children will face in school.

The challenge comes when parents are raising children in a country that is not their native land. There may be misunderstandings between parents and teachers as they both try to give children the best childhood and early learning experience possible.
