While at one time there were no laws governing child employment, today the minors of the United States are protected by a number of child labor laws. In order to protect children from unhealthy working conditions the government developed the laws to standardized the practice of employing children. Today’s employers must abide by the rules or risk serious fines or jail time.

Remember that the different states within the country have created laws of their own. Still, there is a set of generalized rules to follow if you are considering the possibility of employing minors.

  1. Children under the age of 14 cannot be employed except under very specific conditions. These conditions are primarily work in the acting industry.
  2. Children may work to deliver newspapers once they have reached their tenth birthday.
  3. Children do have the right to work under a variety of work-study programs. These must be approved by the state in which they live.
  4. Parents who own a business may employ their children.
  5. Once a minor has reached the age of 14, they have the right to employment under specific conditions. The job must not place them in a dangerous situation and parent must approve of the placement. Some states need the child’s school to sign off as well.

If you are considering hiring a student, it is critical that you contact your state to find what specific laws will apply to you. Failure to do so could end very badly for you and your business.

There are many laws in place to protect children, and in America this was taken very seriously during the Industrial Revolution era. During this time children were treated like adults working in factories, and being exploited. Today, there are child labor laws preventing the abuse of children in a workplace, and limiting what roles they can have in a work place, such as age limits when a child can begin work. This was a vital step in protecting children, and bringing awareness globally that children needed to be sheltered from adults that would give no concern to their well-being.

The Steps That Made A Difference

Child labor laws brought an end to the child labor abuse that was occurring in large cities when the United States was entering into a time of change. Many children were injured, abused, or killed during this time with no regard to their age, family, or resulting quality of life. Organizations, like today’s DFPS, Department of Family and Protective Services, strives to ensure that children are not exploited.

There have also been safeguards to protect children internationally as well, yet many people in foreign countries refuse to acknowledge the rules set in place to protect children. As parents, it is important to shelter children from the harsh realities of child labor, but some families have not choice but to have their children go to work at the age of six, seven, or younger. This is especially true of families in Indonesia, China, and other parts of the globe, where child labor thrives and is very much a normal part of life.

What are the Federal Labor Laws for Children?

No matter what age one was when they got their first job they will always remember it. For many of us it was during our high school years when we were trying to save for our first car. It is now common practice for a business to hire those under 18 to have someone to help them at the business and provide the minor with some experience for later years. If you are a business owner it is important to know what the child labor laws are on a federal and state level.

On both the federal and state level these laws exist to give these children a opportunity to work and gain experience to help them while they are on the path to becoming adults. Any business that may in the future decide to hire someone that is under the age of 18 must follow certain restrictions that comply with this laws. These restrictions are including their hiring and scheduling practices.

Each state can set their own child labor laws to some degree. There are some laws that are set on a federal level and are requirements in each state. These include that no child that is under the age of 14 can be hired anywhere. No child that is under 16 can work before 7 am or after 7 pm on a school night during the school year.It is also not allowed for them to work more than 3 hours a day. While they are in school they are not allowed to work more than 18 hours a week. When on break from school they can not work more than 40 hours a week. When school is in session they can not work during their regular school hours.

In America and most other countries there are laws in place that prohibit child labor. What those laws mean is that children that are under a certain age are not allowed to work. What does that mean to a child that may help around the farm or deliver the newspaper. Does the laws in place clarify these situations? The laws for child labor have been changed to include the conditions for child employment.There are strict regulations that have been set for this situation and include what has been laid out for certain categories of work.

One main concern is for the child that has found a job that requires he or she to drive a motor vehicle.The problem would not be with the way that he drives but with the fact that this would not be a activity that would be allowed under the Child Labor Act. The age that is legal for getting a drivers license is 16 years old all across the United States. Along with this law is the requirement for no child younger than 16 years old to take a job requiring them to drive a vehicle.

The child labor laws are very explanatory in details with situations and work conditions that are required.There is a list for a employer to use so that they will know what can and can not be done when employing a child. An example of this may be a child may only be allowed to work a certain shift.

Each of the states are strict on trying to comply with the child labor laws. The states are wanting to protect the child’s freedom and rights that they are entitled to. The proper authorities are always looking out to ensure that children are not being used to work shifts that are not allowed and working more hours then allowed. It is not allowed for a child to work in a dangerous place or one that their health is at risk.
